Walking Campaign on Khaosan Road by Buddha Watch Unit

Buddha Watch unit task for this campaign is to publicize shops that tend to use Buddhist symbols in a disrespectful way, especially 19 tattoo shops on the road. Our team started by asking for approval from the shops in order to give knowledge regarding the proper act towards Buddhist symbols. Some shops greeted, approved us to place brochures and agreed to help disseminate information to their customers. However, some declined to cooperate with us. The details are as follows.
The owner of Pumpkin tattoo shop listened to our explanation and stated that he used to tattoo Buddhist symbols on customers’ bodies but it was because no one explained to him that such action was inappropriate. He also said that he would not tattoo Buddhist symbols below waist. Then, we further explained that tattooing the symbols on any part of human body was still improper according to 5 reasons we provided on our postcard. We also continued to explain that human beings indulged themselves in sensual pleasure and that would stain the symbols. The owner agreed with our explanation and accepted our brochures to spread information to their customers.
Crazy Ink tattoo was another shop that cooperated with us. They suggested us to contact with Tattoo Association in Thailand to better tackle the problem. Moreover, they received brochures to propagate the information further. The same was true for Mr. Yai Tattoo Shop. The owner of this shop said that he did not tattoo Buddhist symbols to any customers because he really respected the Buddha. He also agreed to receive our brochures to spread out the information.
There were also some shops that received our information but still were not clear whether they would stop tattooing Buddhist symbols. The example is Bamboo Tattoo Shop. The owner said that normally he did not tattoo the symbols below waist but he thought that tattooing the symbols was not wrong because of his attention. He further questioned whether it was better if he was popular worldwide and promoted Buddhism through his tattoos. Besides, he said that it was no different from printing Buddha images on a paper and discarded it after its use. We tried our best to explain the reasons and ask them to reconsider again based on 5 explanations given on a postcard. Finally, he reluctantly received our brochures.
For shops that did not permit us to enter their shops and explain, one of them told us that he was busy and he was playing a game with a shivering sound as if he was afraid that we would destroy their benefits. However, actually we came to explain in order to give them better understanding, reconsider and correct their wrong actions to jointly support Buddhism.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere thanks to all tattoo shops that gave us opportunities to publicize and help us spread the information.

เรื่องเล่าการเดินรณรงค์ที่ถนนข้าวสาร โดยทีม Buddha Watch ….. การรณรงค์ของทีมงานหน่วย BW นั้น ต้องเข้าไปประชาสัมพันธ์ยังร้านต่างๆที่มีแนวโน้มจะนำพระสัญลักษณ์แห่งพระพุทธเจ้าไปใช้ในทางที่ผิด ไม่เหมาะสม โดยเฉพาะร้านสัก หรือ Tattoo shop รวมทั้งหมด 19 ร้าน
ทีมงานได้เข้าไปในลักษณะขออนุญาตขอประชาสัมพันธ์เรื่องการไม่นำพระสัญลักษณ์แห่งพระพุทธเจ้าไปใช้ในทางที่ไม่เหมาะสม บางร้านต้อนรับเราเป็นอย่างดี อนุญาตให้เราแนะนำ ให้วาง โบรชัวร์แนะนำ และ ยินดีรับโบรชัวร์เพื่อช่วยเผยแผ่ให้ลูกค้าได้ทราบ แต่มีบางร้านที่ปฏิเสธการประชาสัมพันธ์ของเรา ดังยกตัวอย่างบางร้านต่อไปนี้
ร้าน Pumkin Tattoo แม้เจ้าของร้านจะดูภายนอกน่ากลัวหน่อย แต่เขาก็อนุญาตและรับฟังการประชาสัมพันธ์ของเรา เขากล่าวว่า เขาเคยให้บริการสักลายพระรูปบนร่างกายนะ แต่เพราะไม่รู้และไม่ได้มีใครแนะนำว่าไม่ควร เขาบอกว่า เขาไม่สักพระรูปต่ำกว่าเอวลงไป เราก็อธิบายว่า แม้จะต่ำกว่าเอวหรือสูงกว่าเอวก็ไม่ควรนำพระรูปมาประดับบนเรือนร่าง ด้วยเหตุผล 5 ประการที่เราทำเป็น post card ยื่นให้เขาอ่านและเราก็อธิบายเพิ่มเติม โดยเฉพาะข้อที่ว่า มนุษย์ยังเสพในกาม หากนำพระรูปมาสักไว้บนร่างกายของเราที่ยังเสพในกาม พระรูปย่อมแปดเปื้อนไปด้วย ย่อมเป็นการไม่ควรอย่างยิ่ง จึงอธิบายโดยรายละเอียดให้เขาตระหนักและเข้าใจโดยลำดับ เขายินดีในการรับโบรชัวร์ขององค์กรเราไว้เพื่อเผยแผ่ให้กับลูกค้าได้เข้าใจต่อไป
และยังมีร้านที่ให้ความร่วมมืออย่างชัดเจนอีกคือร้าน Crazy Ink tattoo ร้านนี้เขาอยากให้เราติดต่อกับสมาคมซึ่งเป็นต้นขั้วในการที่จะแก้ปัญหาให้หมดไปได้ เป็นคำแนะนำที่ดี และทางร้านก็ยินดีรับโบรชัวร์ช่วยเผยแผ่ต่อไป และอีกร้านคือร้าน Mr. Yai Tattoo ซึ่งร้านนี้ไม่ให้บริการสักรูปพระพุทธเจ้าเลย น่าชมเชยอย่างยิ่งครับ เจ้าของก็อายุมากแล้วและดูบูชาเคารพพระรูปมากครับ และลุงยินดีรับโบรชัวร์ไว้เพื่อเผยแผ่ต่อไปครับ
ร้านอีกส่วนหนึ่งเหมือนรับข้อมูลไว้ แต่ไม่ได้มีความชัดเจนว่าจะหยุดสักพระรูป เช่นร้าน Bamboo Tattoo เขากล่าวว่า เขาไม่สักพระรูปต่ำกว่าเอว แต่จริงๆแล้วเขาก็ไม่แคร์ว่าจะสักหรือไม่สักพระรูปบนร่างกาย เขาคิดว่าไม่ผิด เพราะไม่ได้คิดร้าย และเขายังกล่าวว่า ถ้าผมสักพระรูปแล้วผมสามารถไปเวทีโลกและประกาศศาสนาพุทธได้ล่ะ จะไม่ดีหรือ และการที่เราพิมพ์ภาพพระพุทธเจ้าลงบนกระดาษล่ะและพอไม่ใช้ก็ทิ้งขยะ อย่างนี้จะต่างอะไรกับการสักบนร่างกายล่ะ เป็นการแสดงความคิดเห็นที่น่าสนใจ เราก็ได้อธิบายเหตุผลไปบ้างตามสมควรและฝากให้ทางร้านได้พิจารณาอีกทีตามคำอธิบาย 5 ข้อใน post card ที่เราแจกให้ไป และเขายินดีรับโบรชัวร์และ postcard ของเราเพื่อช่วยเผยแผ่ต่อไป (แม้จะด้วยความเกรงใจก็ตาม)
ส่วนร้านที่ไม่ให้อนุญาตเช่น มีร้านหนึ่งกล่าวว่า ผมไม่ว่าง ผมเล่นเกมส์อยู่ ด้วยน้ำเสียงสั่นเล็กน้อย ประหนึ่งว่าเขาก็คงกลัวว่าเราจะมาทำลายผลประโยชน์ของเขา แท้จริงแล้วเรามาเพื่อสร้างความเข้าใจ เพื่อให้เขาได้พิจารณาอีกทีเพื่อแก้สิ่งที่ผิดให้ถูกต้อง เพื่อดูแลพระศาสนาร่วมกัน
สุดท้ายต้องขอกล่าวขอบคุณอย่างสูงกับทุกร้านสักที่ให้โอกาสทีมงานได้เข้าไปประชาสัมพันธ์ ให้ข้อมูลที่ถูกต้อง และได้ช่วยเผยแผ่ข้อมูลต่อไป
มาเถิดท่านทั้งหลาย หากเห็นสิ่งใดที่อาจเป็นปัจจัยให้เกิดความเสียหายต่อพระพุทธศาสนา จงออกมาช่วยกันหยุดยั้ง ให้คำแนะนำ เพื่อการแก้ไขร่วมกันต่อไป เพื่อความยั่งยืนแห่งพระพุทธศาสนาตลอด 5000 ปี
